There was once a time when the world was best seen from a train window—when travel felt like a story unfolding, measured not in miles per hour, but in the steady rhythm of the rails.

You are invited to rediscover that magic on a 9-day rail-inspired odyssey through America’s Northeast—where Adirondack pines perfume the air, Vermont’s green hills roll past vintage dining cars, and rail heritage still hums in storied stations and grand concourses.

This journey traces legendary corridors from Utica’s historic rail hub to the Adirondack backcountry, from Stowe and the von Trapp legacy to New Hampshire’s White Mountains, and onward through Hudson Valley history and the timeless pastoral landscapes of Lancaster County Amish Country. It is the golden age of rail—woven with modern comfort, handpicked hotels, and small-town hospitality.

This itinerary is offered on select dates and can be tailored for your group. We can customize departure points, or arrange a seamless fly-in plan with private motorcoach service for arrivals, touring, and luggage logistics.

CHAPTER 1 — Tracks to the Past

Midwest Departure → Auburn, NY → Utica, NY (D)

Your rail story begins on the open road—private motorcoach comfort, broad Midwestern skies, and the anticipation that comes with a journey designed around America’s most romantic mode of travel. By afternoon we arrive in Auburn, New York, where the trip opens with meaning: a visit to the Harriet Tubman Home and nearby Underground Railroad history.

This is not simply a stop—it is a powerful starting chapter. Walk the grounds Tubman purchased and protected, explore the story of her life beyond the Civil War, and gain deeper context through exhibits and interpretation that bring her courage into the present.

As evening settles, we continue to Utica, once a vital artery of the New York Central line and a true rail-town at heart. Enjoy an included Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant, then check in and rest well—tomorrow, your train window becomes the frame for the landscape ahead.

Featured experience: Harriet Tubman Home (Auburn, NY)
See the restored farmhouse and grounds, learn about Tubman’s later years of service and advocacy, and connect the day’s message of resilience to the journey’s larger theme: the stories America carries along its rails.

CHAPTER 2 — Into the Wild

Adirondack Scenic Railroad → Old Forge free time → Burlington, VT (B, D)

An early departure is the price of admission for a morning like this—and it is worth it. Today we board the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, where vintage coaches sway gently and the world outside becomes wilderness: pine forests, quiet waterways, flashes of sunlight on hidden ponds, and the feeling of traveling the way people once did—unhurried, observant, and deeply present.

After the ride, enjoy free time in Old Forge/Thendara, a classic Adirondack town where small shops, rustic outfitters, cafés, and local lunch spots offer a relaxed taste of mountain life. Browse for Adirondack treasures, grab a warm drink, and breathe in the crisp air that always seems a little cleaner here.

Later, we cross into Vermont and arrive in lively Burlington, set along the shores of Lake Champlain. This evening, enjoy an included group dinner—the perfect close to a day shaped by wild scenery and rail nostalgia—then settle in for the night.

CHAPTER 3 — A Song in the Hills

Stowe → Trapp Family Lodge tour & lunch → Champlain Valley Dinner Train (B, L, D)

Morning brings the alpine charm of Stowe, a village that feels like a postcard brought to life—mountain peaks, charming streets, and the unmistakable sense that you are somewhere special. Our featured experience today is the iconic Trapp Family Lodge, where the story of Maria and Georg von Trapp unfolds against Vermont’s Green Mountains—an immigrant success story, a family legacy, and a place where history still feels warm and personal.

Enjoy a guided experience at the lodge, then sit down to a farm-fresh lunch—Austrian-inspired flavors and Vermont ingredients served in a setting that makes you want to linger.

This evening, romance returns to the rails aboard the Champlain Valley Dinner Train. White linens, attentive service, and a multi-course meal create a classic dining-car atmosphere while the countryside glides by outside your window. It’s the kind of evening people remember long after the trip ends—when the rhythm of the track becomes the soundtrack to a perfect night.

CHAPTER 4 — Maple & Moonlight

Morse Farm Sugarworks → White Mountains resort (Loon Mountain area) (B, D)

Today begins with one of Vermont’s most beloved traditions: Morse Farm Sugarworks. Learn how sap becomes syrup, browse the sugarhouse shop, and—most importantly—taste a Vermont “creemee,” that legendary maple soft-serve that somehow tastes like childhood and fall at the same time.

By afternoon we trade Burlington’s energy for mountain calm, traveling into the White Mountains region and checking in near Loon Mountain. The remainder of the day is intentionally unhurried. Enjoy the resort setting, gather with fellow travelers, take a quiet walk, or simply settle into the kind of restful pause that makes the next day feel even better.

Dinner is included this evening—an easy, comfortable close to a day that balances sweetness, scenery, and a slower pace.

CHAPTER 5 — Railways & Reflections

Loon Mountain Gondola → Squam Lake cruise → rail-themed dinner (B, D)

This morning, we rise above the treeline on the Loon Mountain Gondola, climbing toward panoramic views that stretch across the White Mountains—forests, ridgelines, and open sky in every direction. Take your time at the summit for photos and fresh air. Lunch is on your own at the summit café, giving you flexibility to dine as you like while soaking in the view.

Later, the day softens into pure serenity with a narrated cruise on Squam Lake, famous for its tranquil beauty and cinematic legacy as the setting for On Golden Pond. Watch the shoreline drift by—quiet coves, forested edges, the occasional loon call—and let the stillness do what it does best: restore.

This evening continues the theme with dinner at a rail-inspired restaurant, where New England comfort flavors and vintage décor bring the golden age of travel to life—warm, nostalgic, and satisfying.

CHAPTER 6 — FDR Country

Rhinebeck free time → Hyde Park (Springwood) & FDR Library → classic diner dinner (B, D)

Today blends Hudson Valley charm with the kind of history that feels personal. Begin in Rhinebeck, a village made for strolling—boutiques, galleries, cozy cafés, and lunch on your own in a town that invites you to linger.

Then we step into the world of Franklin D. Roosevelt at Hyde Park. Enjoy a ranger-guided tour of Springwood, followed by time at the Roosevelt Rose Garden and family gravesites. Continue to the FDR Presidential Library & Museum, where exhibits bring the New Deal era and World War II home with clarity and impact.

The day ends on a classic American note with an included dinner at a retro landmark diner—simple, satisfying, and exactly right after a day of iconic history.

CHAPTER 7 — Hudson Views to Lancaster

Walkway Over the Hudson → Lancaster, PA → Cork Factory Hotel (2 nights) (B)

This morning begins with one of the Northeast’s most dramatic “rail-to-trail” transformations: the Walkway Over the Hudson. Once a mighty rail span, it now offers sweeping views of the river and valley below. Enjoy a guided experience that brings the bridge’s history to life while the scenery does the rest—wide open horizons and the wind high above the water.

Then we travel south into Pennsylvania as the landscape shifts into the pastoral calm of Lancaster County—rolling farmland, tidy barns, and a pace of life that feels intentionally slower.

Check in for a two-night stay at the distinctive Cork Factory Hotel, a beautifully reimagined industrial space with modern comfort and authentic character. Dinner is on your own tonight, with excellent options in Lancaster’s lively dining scene.

CHAPTER 8 — Steam, Simplicity & Storytelling

Amish countryside touring → Kitchen Kettle Village → Strasburg Rail Road → Sight & Sound → Amish home dinner (B, D)

This is Lancaster at its most immersive. A step-on guide joins us for an engaging morning of Amish country storytelling—culture, craftsmanship, and curated stops that help visitors understand not just what they see, but why this way of life endures.

Enjoy time to browse and have lunch on your own at Kitchen Kettle Village, where specialty foods, crafts, preserves, baked treats, and Pennsylvania Dutch favorites fill the air with the scents of a working market town.

This afternoon, the rails return—this time with steam and spectacle aboard the Strasburg Rail Road, riding behind a vintage locomotive through classic farmland scenery. The evening brings the breathtaking production style of Sight & Sound Theatre (show TBD), followed by one of the most memorable highlights of the entire tour: an included dinner in an Amish home, where warmth is not a performance—it is simply hospitality, served generously.

CHAPTER 9 — The Final Whistle

Pittsburgh’s Grand Concourse farewell lunch → homeward (B, L)

As the journey turns homeward, we end exactly as this tour deserves: with grandeur, rail heritage, and a table set for a proper farewell. Our final stop is Pittsburgh’s Grand Concourse, a stunning restaurant housed in a former rail terminal—arched ceilings, luminous windows, and the unmistakable feeling of stepping into another era.

Enjoy a farewell lunch beneath its soaring architecture, raising a final toast to rails and rivers, mountain air and maple, history and hometown warmth. Then we continue home—carrying not just photos, but stories worth retelling.
